OCMDG 1511: Osteopathic Principles and Practice I

This course is the first in a 3-course series introducing students to osteopathic clinical medicine with weekly lectures and laboratory experiences. Instruction includes basic history and physical examination skills, SOAP note and history & physical documentation, introduction to ultrasound, and the osteopathic structural examination. Where possible, components of the osteopathic history and physical examination covered in the course align with anatomical sciences curriculum. Students will learn the proper use of diagnostic equipment, as well as palpatory techniques, identification of anatomic landmarks, and diagnosis and treatment of somatic dysfunctions using case-based presentations carried through lecture and laboratory sessions. Near-peer table trainers, osteopathic scholars, standardized patients, and simulation are used to build a complete educational experience. Students are evaluated through written examinations, Standardized Patient Examination practicals, and Osteopathic Principles and Practice practicals.

OCMDG 1522: Osteopathic Principles and Practice II

This course is the second in a 3-course series and continues to utilize weekly lectures and laboratory experiences to develop the practical skills necessary to diagnose and treat patients. Instruction includes basic history and physical examination skills, SOAP note and history & physical documentation, point-of-care ultrasound, and the osteopathic structural examination. The course focuses on additional body systems in alignment with the anatomical sciences curriculum where possible, continuing to cover the structural-functional disturbances, and the diagnosis and treatment of somatic dysfunction. Normal and abnormal findings are illustrated through clinical cases, and students will practice patient care documentation. The development of clinical reasoning skills is emphasized and training is enhanced by near-peer table trainers, osteopathic scholars, standardized patients, and simulation. Students are evaluated through written examinations, Standardized Patient Examination practicals, and Osteopathic Principles and Practice practicals.

OCMDG 1533: Osteopathic Principles and Practice III

This course is the third in a 3-course series and continues to utilize weekly lectures and laboratory experiences to develop the practical skills necessary to diagnose and treat patients across the life cycle and special population groups. Instruction includes basic history and physical examination skills, SOAP note and history & physical documentation, and an introduction to medicolegal aspects of documentation. The course focuses on additional body systems in alignment with the anatomical sciences curriculum where possible, continuing to cover the structural-functional disturbances, and the diagnosis and treatment of somatic dysfunction. Normal and abnormal findings are illustrated through clinical cases, and students will practice patient care documentation. The development of clinical reasoning skills is emphasized, and training is enhanced by near-peer table trainers, osteopathic scholars, standardized patients, and simulation.
